A DYING CONSCIENCE

MARK 6:14-29

1. In I Timothy 4:2 Paul speaks of "having their own conscience seared with a hot iron." What does that mean?

A person can reject the things of God over and over again, become so hard to the things of God, that they are no longer sensitive to Him. It would be like placing your hand on a hot iron over and over again. Finally you would get to the point where you killed all the nerve endings and you will not feel any pain.

2. Our conscience is something that is very important that God has given to each of us. What does it do?

It tells us right from wrong. It is like an alarm system that God has built into us that warns us when we are moving in the wrong direction. Now we can short circuit that system or ignore it so much that we can become insensitive to the alarm, to what God is saying. In other words we can cause the death of our conscience.

3. Psalm 32 is born out of David’s sin with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. Read verses 1-4 of Psalm 32 and explain how David felt as he tried to hide his sin from God.

Physically, emotionally, spiritually he was dry, weak, broken and brittle. All his vitality was gone because he ignored his conscience and tried to hide his sin. That is how living in sin will make you feel if you don’t confess it.

4. Again in Psalm 32 what happens when David acknowledged his sin before God? Read Psalm 32:5 to answer this question.

As soon as David in his heart confessed his sin before God, God was standing there with forgiveness. It is as David said in Psalm 32:1-2, "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit." Praise the Lord for that!
